Half Moon Bay, Calif. – December 30, 2016 – Half Moon Bay Brewing Company announces the return of Brews and Views, the Coastside brewery’s popular speakers’ series that invites members of the community to enjoy a cold brew and a fresh view on American politics and social issues. The winter/spring 2017 lineup welcomes distinguished guests including Marc Smolowitz, a multi-award winning director, producer and executive producer, on January 5; Richard North Patterson, a New York Times best-selling author to discuss his latest book “Fever Swamp: A Journey Through the Strange Neverland of the 2016 Presidential Race,” on January 16; renowned political reformer Duf Sundheim, on January 23; sleep pioneers Patrick Yam and Dr. Melissa Lim of Somnology, Inc., on February 2; Taylor Lewis and Nathan Nayman of Tideline Marine Group, on March 2; and Fagan Harris, CEO of Baltimore Corps, and an advocate for strengthening America’s cities, on April 20.
Brews and Views was founded in November 2009 by co-owner of the Half Moon Bay Brewing Company, Lenny Mendonca, who is director emeritus (retired senior partner) of the San Francisco and Washington, D.C. offices of McKinsey & Company. For Mendonca, who grew up listening to Commonwealth Club forums on NPR, Brews and Views is an ideal way to involve the public in discussions about everything from environmental issues and economic development to social change and politics. The free, public events are formatted like a town hall, often featuring an initial conversation between the guest speaker and moderator, after which the public is invited to participate in a Q&A session.

In an investigation that spans the globe, award-winning filmmaker Sue Williams highlights the dark side of the digital revolution and explores the underbelly of the international electronics industry, revealing how even the tiniest devices have deadly environmental and health costs.
After the “Death by Design” screening, moderator Lenny Mendonca will discuss the film with Marc Smolowitz, a multi-award winning director, producer and executive producer with more than 25 years of experience across all aspects of the entertainment and media business.
Ten percent of the proceeds from all dinner sales at the screening will be donated to the Cabrillo Education Foundation.

Brews and Views welcomes Duf Sundheim, a political reformer, for a post-inauguration discussion on the election of Donald Trump. Over the past several years, Sundheim has worked with a host of state and national leaders to affect the only recall of a sitting governor in the history of California, pass historic election and pension reform measures, and institute reforms in underserved communities, for which his teams have received national and state awards, including the California State Bar Pro Bono Award. A former business attorney and certified agent for the National Football League, Sundheim serves as a federal court mediator and state court settlement judge.

Patrick Yam, CEO, chairman, and co-founder of Somnology, Inc., together with co-founder and chief medical officer Dr. Melissa Lim, helped pioneer a premier sleep monitoring device enterprise to assist a global population afflicted with sleep disorders. They will facilitate an informative discussion on the severity of sleep disorders, and the need to monitor such adversarial health problems. No longer should sleep remain a benign secondary consideration when, domestically, 70 million people are afflicted with sleep disorders. According to the World Health Organization, nearly 1 billion people globally are troubled by sleep disorders; growing at an unsustainable rate of 9% per annum. Part urban history, part call to action, “Refinery Town” shows how concerned citizens can harness the power of local politics to reclaim their community and make municipal government a source of much-needed policy innovation. Early has been an organizer, lawyer, union representative, and labor activist for the past forty-five years. He is the author of three other books, including “Save Our Unions: Dispatches from a Movement in Distress.”

ABOUT LENNY MENDONCA
Lenny Mendonca is a director emeritus (retired senior partner) from the Washington D.C. and San Francisco offices of McKinsey & Company, a global management consulting firm. Mendonca founded McKinsey’s U.S. state and local public sector practice. For many years he led the Firm’s knowledge development efforts overseeing the McKinsey Global Institute and the Firm’s communications, which includes the McKinsey Quarterly. He served for a decade on the McKinsey Shareholder Council (its board of directors). Over the course of his career he helped dozens of government, corporate, and nonprofit clients solve their most difficult management challenges.
Mendonca is a senior fellow at the Presidio Institute, the Chair of Children Now, co-Chair of California Forward, and founder and Chair of Fusecorps. He is the Chair Emeritus of the Bay Area Council and the Economic Institute of the Bay Area, and was vice-chair of the Stanford Graduate School of Business Advisory Council. He serves on the boards of New America, Western Governors University, The Committee for Economic Development, Common Cause, the Bay Area Science and Innovation Consortium, The Campaign for Business & Educational Excellence, The Educational Results Partnership, The College Access Foundation and the 50 Fund. He is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, the Board of Trustees for Junior Statesmen of America and the Advisory Boards of QB3 and The Public Policy Institute of California.
He received his MBA and certificate in public management from the Stanford Graduate School of Business. He holds an AB, magna cum laude, in economics from Harvard College.
