21 Questions: Sean Krainert

We love being able to bring in hardworking people to help us with our clients, and we are thrilled to introduce you to Sean Krainert. Sean is a passionate, creative, and articulate copywriting maven dedicated to seamlessly, and effectively, connecting brands with their target audience through customized copy. He is our go-to guy for client websites, press materials, and much more. When he’s not busy writing, he is reading and traveling the world, and most importantly, being a dad. Read on to learn more about Sean.

  1. I first knew I wanted to be a copywriter when: As soon as I realized I could combine my love for the customer experience and efficient marketing strategies from my hospitality management career with my passion and extensive background in writing and ghostwriting, my two careers became one new exciting business! (BayAreaCopywriting.com)
  2. If I weren’t a copywriter, I would be: A full-time humanitarian traveling around the globe (while travel writing! This is actually on my list of future goals.)
  3. My biggest career horror story: Instead of sending a very big client a polished assignment for publishing, I sent them my document with all my notes for the piece—which at first, they actually thought was what I was presenting to them. It may not sound horrifying, but my thought process and system for writing things isn’t something I would normally share with my clients. I take pride in my end products, but the creative process I take to get there, I like to keep my trade secret.
  4. My biggest accomplishment so far: Being a good dad. It’s a lot of work and it takes an unwavering dedication to mindfulness. Sometimes I even surprise myself with the fact that I’m good at it, but it’s only because I love it.
  5. My first job was: Working the espresso machine at a local coffee shop through high school. I also made a ton of smoothies there which the café thought they pretty much invented. I guess given the decade this was in, they very well could have been the pioneers of the smoothie craze!
  6. My favorite copywriting project: In general, ghostwriting. While it’s hard to let go of something I put so much in to, the process of helping somebody get their thoughts onto paper and turning it into exactly what they had in mind, is rewarding.
  7. Best movie I ever saw: My top list of movies contains 20 titles! Down to #17…you will see that I am a movie fanatic and probably see more movies in one year than most people see in their entire lives.
  8. Biggest pet peeve: When people use their phone while we are talking or sharing a meal together.
  9. Why I love my job, in three words: Passion, experience economy, self-employed (ok that was 4, I cheated.)
  10. I’m secretly terrified of: Heights. Although it’s not really a secret. My legs turn to jelly and my body begins to shiver uncontrollably whenever I’m near a ledge or high up near a window.
  11. I’m embarrassed to admit it, but I watch: …not a lot of TV! Funny that’s an embarrassing thing. But I can rarely chime in on any trending TV conversations.
  12. Favorite place I’ve traveled to: I have traveled to so many places around the globe (it’s my favorite pastime), I can’t narrow it down to one. But I lived in Singapore for two years, and always gravitate back there whenever I am near that corner of the world.
  13. If I could only visit one place before I die, I would go to: A peaceful beach I’ve never been to, somewhere far off. I am exhilarated by exploring new places, but at the same time, the familiar sound of waves crashing on the land is always calming. Best of both worlds.
  14. If I could have dinner with anybody, dead or alive, it would be: Definitely my grandparents. All four of them.
  15. My favorite book is: It would be impossible to choose. I’m a writer so my shelves and nightstand are piled high with books (I only read paper books). My favorite type of book is a compelling sci-fi, fantasy or post-apocalyptic book. I’m also a hard critic, and I have a habit of buying books quite often because I don’t read past the first 50 pages if it doesn’t have me hooked.
  16. I’ve always wanted to work for/with: More nonprofit organizations in the health or mental health arena. I enjoy working with all my clients and helping them reach their audiences. But volunteering to help people feel better about themselves and their lives through my writing is an invaluable feeling.
  17. When I’m not working: I’m dedicated to a work/life balance, so when I’m not working, I am doing the things I really love. I spend a lot of time one-on-one with my daughter on adventures around the Bay Area. I go to the movies usually once or twice a week with my MoviePass! I live in an amazing apartment building and spend hours every week in my thriving produce garden that I work on with my daughter and one of our neighbors. I am always in the kitchen! We eat almost every meal at home so cooking is one of my favorite activities. I read almost every day, I run or lift weights as often as possible, and if the sun is shining, I always find time to drive out to Pacifica and watch the waves.
  18. My favorite publication to read: I’m usually reading travel magazines or Runner’s World. I also write marketing and customer experience articles for a print publication and I love to read through the other pieces in the monthly issues.
  19. I wish somebody would have told me this when I began my career: To study journalism, not creative writing.
  20. The #1 thing I want new clients to know about me: I genuinely enjoy transforming the essence of a client’s business into words that attract, inspire and motivate their audience. And I love working with clients at any stage, whether they come to the table with a clearly outlined mission and message, or only with passion, drive and ideas.
  21. My advice to future copywriters: Think beyond selling products and services when you’re working with clients. The only way to truly help them with your writing skills is to be able to understand what they are thinking, and what drives them at their core. And the only way to find that out is to know how to ask the right questions.
